There will be an academic teams presentation at 4:15 pm on Thursday, September 2nd in room 703. Parents and students are invited to join this presentation to get more information about the Science Olympiad, Math Olympiad, Lego League and Turkish Olympiad.

Uniform shirts (Polo Shirts) will be available for purchase beginning July 12, 2010. Below is the order form. You must have this form filled out when you come to the office to purchase the shirts. The shirts will come in various sizes and the purchase of a Navy Blue shirt will be required of all students (used for certain days, field trips, etc). Only Cash, Money Order or Check will be accepted for the purchase of the shirts. Office hours are M-Th from 8am-5pm.

STARS Students went to the field trip of the year called SATURDAY AT THE SEA in the Florida State University Marine Lab by Turkey point Florida. Students did an extensive marine research to identify vertebrate and invertebrate by holding them and looking through microscopes while they are eating shrimp and moving around. The concentrated plankton was amazing to watch as they are attracted to light.

Stars staff and students had a great Basketball Game on Friday afterschool . Game was very challenging for teachers and students but players and the audience had great fun. Some of the students stayed after school to watch the game. Hot dogs, chips, and soda were being sold during the game. Teachers won the game by 36-26.

On Saturday 24, STARS Students, teachers and parents gathered at Jackson view park. Students and teachers enjoyed the beautiful weather by playing a soccer; while they were running after the soccer ball excitedly some of the teachers and parent were cooking some delicious food on the Grill.
At the end of the day everyone in the STARS family was happy to be there and they promised to come together and repeat the same since we all had a great fun and joy for being together in an extracurricular activity on a weekend.

Congratulations to all Earth Day project competition finalists. All projects were wonderful and judges worked hard to select best poster with message. Here are the winners from each grade level
From 6th grade with message “Go Green” by Cikayah Harrison
7th grade with message “The Earth needs a helping hand” by Dominique Snead, Kayla Grant, Kadahlia Bryant
8th grade was a close race but the message “Because There is No place Like Home” by Briana Davis, Madison Tate, Chelsea White was the winner.
The winners will have free Fun Station admission on May 15th.

Math Olympiad team had a great camp at Georgia Seminole State Park between April 16 and April 18. Halle, Cikayah, Ezzdeen, Kasus, Justin and Waseem was camping as the math team enjoying the natural environment where they had chances to hike in the woods, pedal on the river with a boat, and go fishing. They tried setting the campfire, preparing the barbecue, cleaning and pitching tents... and so on. Our team members practiced some sports and fun activities such as soccer, volleyball while experiencing team spirit or sleep on a hummock(!) :) as well. Well done brave mathletes. Keep looking forward the upcoming events.

8th graders had a very fun experiment this week. They dissected sheep heart and figured out how the heart works, what aorta is, and how many chambers the sheep heart has. Before they start dissecting, Mr. Akgul explained the students how important it is to wear gloves and goggles to protect themselves from the chemicals used keep the heart fresh.

7th grade students went to Wakulla Springs State Park on April 16th Friday. Students had the worksheet to complete during field trip. The trip started with observing a mother turtle who is looking for a place to lay eggs. Then students went on the boat tour. The tour timing was wonderful to observe bird nests hatched eggs. Unfortunately manatees already gone to migrate other places at this time of the season.

Stars Middle School families are invited to a welcome family picnic on Saturday, September 18th. The picnic will be held at Jackson View Park located at 2585 Clara Kee Blvd, off of North Monroe St. at 2PM. We will have grill and drinks. You may bring snacks of your choice. Please contact Mr. Aktas if you have any questions or would like to help in organizing the event.

8 grade students went to Wild Adventures Water & Theme Park to celebrate their graduation on Saturday May, 22nd with Ms. Jordan and Mr. Omay. They had great fun while they were riding water rides and swimming in the pool. Also they had a chance to see some wild animals like elephant, giraffe, camel and so on. They really enjoyed this fantastic trip and turn back home with great pleasure.

Our second annual career day was held on Wednesday May 12. We had variety of professions such as firefighters, mortician, K9 squad were presented at the school. Students enjoyed speaking to the professionals from different careers.

The STARS Cheetahs did it again; STARS basketball team attended in a basketball tournament in Jacksonville and got 3rd place. For two weeks, every morning before school they practiced for the game and during the entire game STARS team members did not give up the game. We congratulate them for displaying such courage and determination throughout the whole game. Although they had to play without any sub player, their performance was extraordinary and worth praising. We give them a big round of applause and hope to see them in future games.

Last Friday April 23rd we had a wonderful international night program. Parents, students and friends of STARS family, attended to this beautiful night. We all enjoyed the diverse food and the ornaments and some cultural items that are displayed. We all had fun and amazed with the talent show that were performed by STARS student and parents. While testing the variety of the food we were all delighted to listen to the music of different cultures and traditions. At the end of the night the STARS family left the school with full of joy and happiness promising to meet here at STARS next year in an annual international night.

The sixth graders took a field trip to Mission San Luis last Tuesday. The Mission is a replication of the Apalachee Indian and Spanish Mission that existed during the 1600's right here in our town. There are period historical re-enactors and the buildings have all been recreated according to the archaeological digs that they have there on a continuing basis. Students and teachers have enjoyed the trip and the experience they had at the Mission.

STARS signed up for Saturday at the sea program to provide hands on science experiences to students. The students will be selected based on their discipline and academic performance to attend the workshops towards end of May. The program is sponsored by Florida State University Marine Laboratory. The materials and details will be given to students.
